Pergolas offer more than shade.  They DO offer privacy as well.  We’ve looked into ones made of vinyl, redwood, treated lumber, and a TREX type of product.  I think that’s my choice.  Sorry about the brand name, but I don’t know what else to call it.  The TREX type requires no maintenance and is still much less harsh on the eyes than vinyl and blends in with the natural look of timber that we like so much.  Redwood is a great choice, too.  Nothing looks prettier and more natural than redwood, providing it is well maintained.
